Kyiv: In what is being described as the most intense aerial attack since the beginning of the war, Russia launched a massive overnight airstrike on Ukraine, firing 477 drones and 60 missiles across multiple regions, including western Ukraine. The Ukrainian Air Force reported that several of these aerial threats were intercepted and neutralized, but the scale of the attack left significant destruction and panic behind.

According to officials, major regions like Kherson and Kharkiv witnessed heavy drone strikes, resulting in civilian casualties. In Kherson, multiple fatalities were reported, while in Kharkiv, drone attacks caused fires and building damage. In Cherkasy, at least six people, including a child, were injured when debris from a downed missile hit a residential area.

The nationwide assault led to massive power outages in several districts. Emergency crews have been dispatched to restore electricity and assess structural damage. Authorities warned that repair efforts could take days due to the widespread impact on the energy grid.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack, calling it “yet another act of terror” by Russia. In his nightly address, he urged Western allies to speed up the delivery of advanced air defense systems and ammunition to help counter future attacks. “This is not just a war on Ukraine, it’s a war on peace and humanity,” Zelenskyy said.

Ukrainian military sources revealed that more than 300 of the incoming drones were successfully shot down, thanks to the coordination of air defense units. However, they also acknowledged that the remaining drones and missiles hit both military and civilian infrastructure.

In the capital Kyiv, air raid sirens blared for hours, and residents took shelter in metro stations overnight. Though the city saw minimal direct impact, the psychological toll was high, with many describing the night as one of the most frightening since the invasion began.

Russia has not officially commented on the scale of the attack, but Ukrainian officials suggest it may have been a show of strength aimed at deterring international support for Kyiv.

As tensions escalate, the international community is closely watching the situation. NATO and EU leaders are expected to discuss urgent responses and increased defense support for Ukraine in the coming days.
