international cricket newsBrisbane [Australia]: India’s iconic off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has announced his retirement from international cricket, marking the end of an illustrious career spanning over two decades. Ashwin made the announcement following the draw of the Brisbane Test, stepping into the post-match press conference alongside captain Rohit Sharma.

The moment was emotional, as Ashwin, visibly moved, was embraced by fellow teammates, including Virat Kohli, before confirming his decision to retire. “This is my last day as an international cricketer,” Ashwin said, reflecting on his career. “I’ve had a lot of fun, made great memories with my teammates, and though we’ve lost some greats over the years, we are still the last bunch of ‘OGs’ on the team.”

Ashwin, 38, thanked his teammates, coaches, and the BCCI for their unwavering support throughout his career. “Rohit, Virat, Ajinkya, Pujara – these players, who’ve helped me take wickets with their exceptional fielding and support, will always be part of my journey.”

Over his career, Ashwin’s records speak for themselves. He played 106 Tests, claiming 537 wickets, including 37 five-wicket hauls, and scored 3,503 runs. He is India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Tests, behind the legendary Anil Kumble, and the seventh-highest overall in the format. His contributions to Indian cricket, particularly in Test matches, were pivotal in India’s dominance between 2014-2019.

Not just a spinner, Ashwin was also a handy lower-order batsman, contributing significantly with the bat over the years. He made 181 white-ball appearances (116 ODIs and 65 T20Is), with 228 wickets and 707 runs in ODIs. His T20I career included 72 wickets at an impressive average of 23.22.

Ashwin’s remarkable achievements have firmly etched his name as one of India’s greatest cricketers. His retirement leaves behind a massive void in the Indian team, one that will be tough to fill for future generations.

Legacy and Impact: As a spinner, Ashwin redefined off-spin, adding new variations to the craft and making significant contributions in all three formats. His expertise, especially in home conditions, made him a match-winner and one of the key figures in India’s rise to the top of world cricket.

Ashwin’s retirement marks the end of an era, but his legacy as a key contributor to India’s cricketing successes, including the 2011 World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy, will continue to inspire future cricketers.
