Punjab to Release Extra Water to Rajasthan for Military Use
CM Bhagwant Mann Clarifies Move Is in National Interest, Not for Haryana….
Chandigarh, Punjab – In a significant decision reflecting the spirit of national unity, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has announced the release of additional water to Rajasthan. The move, he said, has been made in view of the national interest and to meet the needs of Indian armed forces stationed along the Rajasthan border.
The Rajasthan government had requested Punjab to provide extra water to support military operations and personnel deployed in the desert region. Responding to this appeal, CM Mann approved the release of water, stating that Punjab has always stood first when it comes to national priorities.
“Punjab has never hesitated to make sacrifices for the country. Our brave jawans, many of whom belong to Punjab, are deployed on the front lines in Rajasthan. This water is for our own soldiers,” Mann said while addressing the media.
However, the Chief Minister made it clear that this should not be seen as a regular or political water-sharing decision. He strongly opposed releasing Punjab’s water to Haryana and criticized the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for attempting to divert water without Punjab’s consent.
He alleged that the BBMB has misused Punjab’s share of funds and demanded a full financial audit of the board. “Punjab’s resources cannot be used unilaterally. We will not allow our rights to be compromised,” Mann asserted.
This development comes at a time when inter-state water disputes are a growing concern, especially between Punjab and neighboring states. While the water for Rajasthan is being released as a goodwill gesture in support of military and national needs, the Punjab government remains firm in protecting its legal and natural rights over river water distribution.
Political analysts see this as a strategic move by the Aam Aadmi Party-led Punjab government to assert its position on water rights while maintaining a strong nationalist image.
