Punjab Seeks Uninterrupted Fuel Supply Ahead of Wheat Harvest, Assures No Shortage
Chandigarh ; Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Saturday (28th March) urged the Government of India to ensure an enhanced and uninterrupted supply of petrol, diesel, and DAP fertiliser as the state prepares for a massive wheat harvest of 140 lakh metric tonnes (LMT). He cautioned that any disruption in fuel availability could directly affect the country’s food security.
At the same time, the Chief Minister reassured the public that there is no shortage of essential fuels and no need to panic, stressing that timely action by the Centre is crucial to keep harvesting and transportation operations running smoothly.
Addressing a press conference, Mann said he had raised the issue during a virtual meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He noted that large-scale use of tractors, harvesters, and trucks during the harvesting season makes a steady fuel supply critical.
“Punjab is likely to produce around 140 LMT of wheat this year. To ensure smooth harvesting and transportation, regular fuel supply is essential. This is vital to maintaining the country’s food security,” he said.
No Shortage, Adequate Stocks Available
Mann emphasized that there is no immediate shortage of fuel in the state. Punjab currently has stock for 12–14 days of petrol and diesel and about six days of LPG, which is considered normal.
He added that at the national level, India has secured petrol and diesel reserves for 60 days and LPG stock for 30 days through import agreements with 41 countries.
“There is no need for panic buying or hoarding. Supplies are running smoothly, and strict action will be taken against black marketers,” he warned.
LPG Supply Smooth, Strict Monitoring in Place
Sharing operational data, the Chief Minister said that out of 71,000 LPG refill requests received till Thursday, 69,000 had already been fulfilled.
Authorities have also conducted 1,497 inspections, leading to the seizure of 301 LPG cylinders to curb irregularities.
He reiterated that there is no possibility of a lockdown and that both agricultural and industrial activities are functioning normally. A helpline (0172-3321001) has also been launched for fuel-related issues.
Punjab Ready to Support Nation’s Food Needs
Highlighting the state’s contribution to national food security, Mann said Punjab is ready to supply 41 LMT of wheat currently stored in its godowns, along with the expected 140 LMT harvest and 139 LMT of paddy.
Call for Fertiliser Supply, Policy Support
The Chief Minister also urged the Centre to ensure timely supply of DAP fertiliser, especially with paddy transplantation set to begin from June 1. He further demanded reducing the waiting period for LPG refills in rural areas from 45 days to 25 days, bringing it at par with urban regions.
Welcoming the Centre’s decision to reduce additional taxes on petrol and diesel, Mann termed it a “confidence-building measure.” “If the country needs it, the stock can be lifted anytime. Punjab has always stood by the nation and will continue to do so,” he said.
Push for Strategic Preparedness
Referring to his interaction with the Prime Minister, Mann said he had highlighted all key concerns and stressed the need for proactive diplomatic efforts to avoid shortages.
“India must ensure self-reliance and strategic strength in securing essential resources,” he added.
