Punjab Seeks Public Suggestions for Sacrilege Law

Punjab In a significant move aimed at curbing sacrilege incidents, the Punjab Legislative Assembly has invited public suggestions for drafting a new law. Citizens have been given a one-month window to share their views and recommendations to shape the proposed legislation. The initiative reflects a growing commitment to include public opinion in important legislative processes.

The assembly has made the process simple and accessible for everyone. Citizens can send their suggestions directly via WhatsApp and email, and those without digital access can use traditional methods—like sharing feedback through their local MLA. The dedicated WhatsApp number and email address were officially released by the Punjab Vidhan Sabha on Tuesday.

This inclusive step comes at a time when Punjab has witnessed several controversies and tensions linked to religious sacrilege. By encouraging people to voice their thoughts, the state aims to develop a robust and widely accepted law that addresses both legal and emotional aspects of the issue.

Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan emphasized that the new sacrilege law will be made with the help of the people of Punjab. He urged residents from all backgrounds, faiths, and regions to take part in this legislative process. “We want a law that ensures justice, promotes harmony, and reflects the will of the people,” he said.

To make the initiative more participatory, the assembly has also asked elected representatives to help those in rural or digitally disconnected areas in sending their suggestions. The Speaker clarified that all submissions will be reviewed carefully and will play a key role in drafting the final bill.

The last date to send suggestions is 31st August 2025. After collecting the feedback, a special committee will evaluate the responses and begin preparing the draft of the bill. Once ready, the proposed sacrilege law will be tabled in the upcoming assembly session for discussion and approval.

This development has been welcomed by civil society groups, legal experts, and religious organizations. Many believe this law could become a benchmark for other states facing similar challenges.
