Chandigarh: On Monday, the Punjab government and the British Council Education India Private Limited (BCEIPL) inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the purpose of providing government college students with English language instruction in the form of English for Work.

Bhagwant Mann, the chief minister, claimed that the action will aid in improving the employable skills of Punjabi youngsters. He added that it will also stop the brain drain from the state and assist them in finding employment in the industrial and service sectors.

The “English for Work” course, according to Mann, will concentrate on using English in professional settings. He claimed that it will have a strong emphasis on speaking, reading, writing, and listening skills, with an emphasis on grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation.

The CM added that, in accordance with the MoU, the project would begin as a pilot programme for 5,000 students in the state’s government colleges during the academic year 2023–2024.

The freedom of independent study and live, interactive sessions would be combined, according to him, in an online blended learning course using the tried-and-true “flipped classroom” methodology.

Mann expressed the wish that pupils would improve their proficiency in the English language so they could speak with assurance in formal settings. He explained that there would be a pre-assessment test to determine the students’ proficiency level, a post-assessment once the course was finished, and that students would receive certificates upon successfully completing the course.
