Punjab on heightened alert before Independence Day

Security tightened across state to prevent untoward incidents…..

Punjab has been placed on high alert as security agencies intensify vigilance in the run-up to Independence Day celebrations. The move comes amid intelligence inputs indicating possible attempts by anti-social elements to disrupt peace and harmony during the national event.

Police across the state have been instructed to conduct strict checking at entry and exit points, increase patrolling in sensitive areas, and keep a close watch on crowded public spaces. Railway stations, bus terminals, marketplaces, and government buildings are under heightened surveillance, with additional personnel deployed to ensure safety.

DGP Punjab has directed all district police chiefs to maintain round-the-clock monitoring and coordinate closely with central security agencies. Special teams have been formed to inspect hotels, guest houses, and rented accommodations to track the movement of suspicious individuals. Drone surveillance is also being deployed in certain high-profile areas to monitor large gatherings.

Sources in the security establishment said that while there is no specific threat, precautionary measures are being taken due to past instances of attempts to create disturbances around national events. The alert aims to deter any such plans and reassure citizens of their safety.

In Amritsar, which hosts the symbolic daily retreat ceremony at the Wagah border, security has been further strengthened with multi-layered checks. Visitors are being subjected to thorough frisking, and vehicle movement near sensitive zones has been restricted. Similarly, Chandigarh, the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana, is witnessing enhanced security near government offices and public parks where Independence Day functions will be held.

Public awareness is also being emphasized as a crucial part of the security net. Police have appealed to citizens to remain vigilant, report unattended bags or objects, and inform authorities immediately about any suspicious activity. Loudspeaker announcements, social media updates, and community meetings are being used to spread these messages.

Security experts note that Punjab’s geographical location, sharing an international border with Pakistan, adds to the complexity of maintaining law and order during significant national events. In the past, there have been attempts to smuggle arms, drugs, and other contraband into the state through border routes. While recent months have seen major crackdowns on such networks, authorities are leaving no stone unturned ahead of August 15.

The government has assured that all arrangements are in place for smooth celebrations. “Our focus is on ensuring that the day is marked with pride and peace. We are committed to preventing any incident that could disrupt the festive spirit of Independence Day,” a senior police official said.

As tricolours begin to adorn streets, schools, and public buildings, the mood in Punjab is one of cautious celebration—pride in the nation’s freedom, paired with an understanding of the security challenges that come with it. The heightened alert is expected to remain in place until after the Independence Day functions conclude peacefully.
