Chandigarh : The ongoing water dispute between Punjab and Haryana has reached a crucial stage, with the Punjab and Haryana High Court scheduled to hear the matter today. The dispute concerns the allocation of water from the Ravi and Beas rivers, and it has been a long-standing issue between the two states. The issue gained further attention after the court intervened, and a decision is awaited to resolve the conflicting claims.

In a related development, a meeting of the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) is set to take place today, with the presence of engineers from the three involved states – Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh. The engineers will provide technical insights into the distribution of water and present reports on the status of water levels in the region, along with possible solutions to the issue. The involvement of these engineers is expected to add a technical dimension to the dispute resolution process, as the states strive to reach an amicable solution based on shared water resources.

The hearing in the High Court comes at a time when the issue of water sharing has reached a critical point. While Punjab has raised concerns over the construction of the SYL (Satluj-Yamuna Link) Canal and its impact on water distribution, Haryana has sought a more significant share of the river water, which is crucial for irrigation and other agricultural needs. The legal battle has been ongoing for several decades, with both states accusing each other of not fulfilling agreements regarding water distribution.

Both Punjab and Haryana have emphasized the importance of equitable water sharing, and the court’s ruling will have far-reaching implications not only for these two states but also for the broader region. It is expected that today’s discussions, coupled with the BBMB meeting, will shed light on the technicalities of the water distribution system and provide clarity on how resources can be better managed. The issue remains sensitive, with political and social pressures from various stakeholders adding complexity to the legal proceedings.

As the hearing progresses, stakeholders are hoping that a solution can be found that serves the interests of all parties involved and ensures sustainable water distribution for future generations.
