Punjab Govt Introduces New Prison Reform Model with Clinics, Libraries in Jails

1

Patiala : The Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, has unveiled a new reform model aimed at transforming the state’s prison system. The initiative focuses on improving inmate welfare and helping prisoners reintegrate into mainstream society.
Announcing the reforms at a press conference, Jail Minister Ravjot Singh said that an ‘Aam Aadmi Clinic’ and a library have been set up inside Patiala Central Jail as part of the pilot project. Similar libraries will soon be introduced in other jails across the state.
A key feature of the reform is a new classification system for undertrial prisoners.
Offences will now be divided into ‘major’ and ‘minor’ categories. The move is intended to protect inmates involved in minor offences from the influence of hardened criminals while also improving overall prison management.
The minister thanked the Chief Minister for introducing and passing a long-pending bill related to prison reforms. He emphasized that the government aims to turn jails into centers of reform rather than mere places of punishment.
Issuing a stern warning, Ravjot Singh said that any complaint arising from within prisons will be acted upon immediately. He added that strict action will be taken against anyone violating rules, including officials within the department.
