Punjab Govt Following Ambedkar’s Vision with Strong Focus on Education & Social Justice: Harpal Singh Cheema
Chandigarh/Punjab: Punjab’s Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema asserted that the state government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is firmly walking on the path shown by B. R. Ambedkar, focusing on real development rather than symbolic politics. Addressing the ‘Shiksha Sankalp Programme’ held on the 135th birth anniversary of Babasaheb at the School of Eminence in Nangal, Cheema said the government has taken concrete steps to honour the legacy of both Bhagat Singh and Dr. Ambedkar by installing their portraits in every government office across Punjab.
Highlighting Ambedkar’s contribution, Cheema described him as the architect of the Indian Constitution and a champion of education, noting that his vision continues to shape modern society. He emphasised that the state government has prioritised education, healthcare and social justice, ensuring that policies translate into real benefits for people. He also pointed out that Punjab has become the first state to implement reservation for Scheduled Castes in the Advocate General’s office, with around 60 law officers currently serving under this provision.
The minister further underlined recent legislative and cultural initiatives, including the passage of the Jagt Jyot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Bill 2026, which aims to impose stricter punishment for sacrilege. He also announced the establishment of a Guru Ravidas Bani Centre to provide training to around 700 students and said that the 650th Prakash Parv of Guru Ravidas will be celebrated across the state with devotion and grandeur.
Speaking on development works, Cheema noted that Sri Anandpur Sahib constituency has received significant funding, ranking among the top recipients in Punjab. He added that major infrastructure projects, including roads, bridges and schools, are being carried out, with over ₹100 crore spent specifically on upgrading educational facilities in the constituency. Modern laboratories, libraries and improved infrastructure are transforming government schools into competitive institutions.
Punjab School Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains echoed similar sentiments, stating that his life is dedicated to strengthening the government education system. He emphasised that Dr. Ambedkar’s ideals of equality and access to education remain central to the government’s policies. Bains highlighted that government schools in Punjab are now setting new benchmarks, with students excelling in national-level competitive exams such as JEE and NEET, reflecting improved teaching standards and infrastructure.
He added that the programme was organised not for political gain but to promote Ambedkar’s ideology and inspire students. High-performing students were honoured during the event, encouraging others to pursue excellence through education. Stressing that education is the most powerful tool for societal transformation, Bains said the government is committed to ensuring equal opportunities for all.
Announcing development grants, Bains detailed financial assistance allocated to several villages and institutions in the Sri Anandpur Sahib constituency, aimed at strengthening grassroots infrastructure. These initiatives, he said, will accelerate development and improve living standards in rural areas.
The event also saw participation from several dignitaries and community leaders who shared their views on Dr. Ambedkar’s life and contributions, reinforcing the message of equality, empowerment and inclusive growth.
