Ferozepur — Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria on Tuesday assured farmers cultivating government land along the India-Pakistan border that he would take up their demand for proprietary rights with Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.

During his visit to flood-affected villages in Ferozepur, Kataria said granting ownership rights to these farmers was necessary so they could also receive proper compensation in case of natural calamities. He emphasized the need for a permanent solution, acknowledging that farmers cultivating such land had been facing hardships for decades.

The Governor held a review meeting with senior officials at the MES Inspection Bungalow to assess the flood situation and ongoing relief measures. Later, he visited the Hussainiwala Joint Check Post (JCP) on the India-Pakistan border, which remains completely submerged due to floods, and interacted with affected families living in relief camps.

Several farmers told Kataria that they had been cultivating government land for generations. Earlier, their names were recorded in the official girdawari (cultivation record), but later removed from revenue records. This, they said, had deprived them of any disaster compensation, despite suffering heavy losses in both the 2023 floods and the recent calamity.

Kataria assured them that their concerns would be strongly raised with the state government and efforts would be made to ensure justice for the border farmers of Punjab.
