Punjab Floods: Chaos and Hope at Baupur Bandh Relief Camp in Sultanpur Lodhi
Relief efforts underway for 2,000+ flood-hit villagers….
Baupur (Sultanpur Lodhi) – The Baupur bandh in Sultanpur Lodhi has emerged as the epicentre of flood relief operations, where chaos and resilience go hand in hand. Serving as a base camp for rescue teams, the bandh is providing assistance to more than 2,000 people from over 20 flood-affected villages, including Baupur, Rampur Gaura, and Sangra.
Despite being partially submerged itself, the bandh continues to function as a makeshift hub — acting as a relief camp, port, meeting ground, and even a waiting point for flood victims. The strip is crowded with Army personnel, SDRF teams, volunteers, villagers, livestock, and piles of essential supplies.
Flood-Hit Villagers Struggle for Boats
Accessing the boat point has become increasingly difficult as water levels rise. Villagers wait for hours under the scorching sun to board boats, carrying sacks of food, household items, and even cattle. While three boats, including a large one provided by Sultanpur Lodhi MLA Rana Inderpartap, run throughout the day, the demand far outstrips supply.
Rajya Sabha MP Balbir Singh Seechewal, who has deployed boats for rescue, was also seen waiting for vessels to return. Even political leaders face delays, highlighting the severe shortage.
Resilience Amid Crisis
Despite the dire conditions, villagers continue their tradition of sewa (selfless service). Elderly women salvage belongings, youth help coordinate supplies, and farmers bring cattle for grazing on higher ground. Relief workers and volunteers from different organizations share limited shade and resources, united by a common goal — to support flood-hit families.
The Army has made it clear that their boats will only be used for essential relief and rescue missions, leading to strict monitoring of passenger movements.
Spirit of Punjab Shines
Though Sultanpur Lodhi has battled recurring floods since 1985, the resilience of its people remains unbroken. Year after year, they rise from devastation, rebuild their homes, and continue with unshaken determination. The Baupur bandh, despite the chaos, symbolizes both hope and survival for thousands waiting for relief
