Satluj, Beas & Raavi rivers swell dangerously; evacuation in full swing, rescue teams on high alert….
Chandigarh: Continuous rainfall in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh has led to the swelling of the Satluj, Beas, and Raavi rivers, triggering flood-like situations in several districts including Fazilka, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, and Ferozepur. The district administrations of Fazilka and Gurdaspur have issued flood alerts and evacuated over 20 villages to safer areas.
Relief Camps and Safety Measures
The Fazilka administration used the public address system to urge residents, especially women, children, and the elderly, to move to five relief camps set up near border villages. Meanwhile, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Border Security Force (BSF), and the Indian Army have been placed on standby.
Worst Hit Areas
In Kapurthala’s Sultanpur Lodhi, more than 20 villages are submerged due to the overflowing Beas river. Floodwaters have also caused significant damage in several villages of Mukerian subdivision in Hoshiarpur.
Schools Closed, Weather Department Warning
Considering the worsening situation, schools in districts including Fazilka, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Pathankot, and Gurdaspur will remain closed for today. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert, predicting heavy rainfall across most parts of Punjab.
