Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav on Monday reviewed the security arrangements across the state in preparation for Independence Day celebrations. The DGP held a high-level meeting with senior police officials, district police chiefs, and intelligence units to assess the current security scenario and chalk out strategies to ensure a safe and incident-free event on August 15.

The meeting, held at Punjab Police Headquarters in Chandigarh, focused on tightening vigil across sensitive areas, including border districts, crowded public spaces, and key government installations. With the state sharing an international border with Pakistan, the DGP emphasized the need for heightened surveillance to prevent any infiltration attempts or illegal activities.

Gaurav Yadav directed all district police units to deploy additional personnel at vulnerable locations, particularly along highways, railway stations, and bus stands. “We are committed to ensuring that Independence Day celebrations across Punjab remain peaceful. Every possible measure is being taken to counter any potential threats,” he said.

The DGP also reviewed intelligence inputs regarding possible attempts by anti-national elements to disrupt peace during the festivities. He urged police units to work in close coordination with central agencies, including the Border Security Force (BSF), to ensure effective information sharing and swift action. Special emphasis was placed on monitoring social media platforms for any suspicious activities or inflammatory content.

Police have been instructed to conduct thorough checks at hotels, guest houses, and rental accommodations to identify suspicious individuals. Night patrolling has been intensified in urban as well as rural areas, with additional checkpoints set up along key routes.

In view of recent incidents of drone activity along the border, the DGP ordered the deployment of anti-drone technology and rapid response teams in sensitive districts such as Amritsar, Tarn Taran, and Ferozepur. “We will not allow any breach of security. Technology, intelligence, and ground-level vigilance will work together to ensure foolproof arrangements,” Yadav stressed.

Apart from security measures, the police are also coordinating with local administrations to manage traffic and crowd control at major Independence Day venues. Special teams will be deployed to facilitate smooth movement of the public while maintaining strict security protocols.

Public cooperation was also sought in maintaining peace and security. The DGP appealed to citizens to report any suspicious activity immediately to the nearest police station or through the helpline numbers. “The safety of Punjab is our collective responsibility,” he added.

Independence Day celebrations in Punjab are expected to witness large gatherings, with the state government planning official functions in Chandigarh and various district headquarters. Given the current security environment, authorities are leaving no stone unturned to ensure that the events are conducted without any untoward incident.
