PM Modi inaugurates new campus of Nalanda University near Varanasi
Nalanda (Varanasi): During his first visit to his constituency Varanasi in his 3rd term as MP and Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi has today inaugurated the re-constructed Campus of ancient 5th century, Nalanda University. This ancient univisersity of Buddhist learning set up during Samrat Ashoka’s era was allegedly destroyed by invading Turkish armies of Bakhtiar Khilji in 1193 AD when they defeated Indian Kings of Magadh region. The hoolingans of attacking army put to fire all ancient books in the University campus and destroyed them.
His descendent Mehmood Khilji was defeated by Maharana Kumbha of Mewad and he raised a victory pillar Vijay Stambh between (1437-48). Khiljis were later destryed by Mongols in the following period.
Rebuilt at an outlay of Rs. 1749 crores, the inauguration is a big step in revival of Buddhist learning and cultural ethos of ancient Bharat. The Vishwavidyalaya campus inauguration ceremnoy is being attanded by many dignitarues and Ambassadors of 17 countries ( Sri Lanka, Vietnam, South Korea, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia etc,) who helped in revival of this ancient seat of Learning in India.
Bihar Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar and chief minister Nitish Kumar is also participating in the function today. (NewsOnRadar.com Bureau)
