Peace at Khanauri border too

Sangrur: After two days of tension at the Khanauri border, where a large number of farmers from various parts of the state are camping as part of their “Dilli Chalo” agitation, the situation remained peaceful today.

There was no report of any untoward incident as protesting farmers quietly waited for the outcome of the meeting to be held between their leaders and Union ministers in the evening.

Police personnel and farmers jointly cleaned the area where tear gas shells were fired yesterday. Youngsters were seen flying kites while others were seen in relaxed mood after two days’ of tension, clashes and scuffles between the Haryana Police and farmers.

The protesters remained sitting several yards away from the barricades put up by the Haryana Police.

BKU (Sidhupur) president Jagjit Singh Dallewal said they were also citizens of India so there was no need to put barricades to stop them from going to Delhi. He said they were going there to get their demands implemented. He also said the government had “murdered” democracy.

Abhimanyu Kumar, a farmer leader from Haryana, alleged the Haryana Government was indulging in violent activities while farmers had not taken any step in that direction. A large number of farmers had been arrested by the police in Haryana. If their demands were not met, they would reach Delhi by removing all barricades, he said.
