6.5 crore income tax returns filed by July 31
6,500,000 income tax returns were submitted by the due date of July 31. On the very last day, which was Monday, 36.91 lakh income tax returns were submitted up to 6 o’clock in the evening. More than 1.78 crore people were able to successfully enter onto the Income Tax Department’s e-filing website between the hours of 6 p.m. and midnight on Monday.
NEW DELHI: As of July 31 (till 6 p.m.), the deadline for filing returns for salaried taxpayers and other non-tax audit cases, more than 6.50 crore income tax returns (ITRs) for 2022–23 had been submitted. As of July 31 of last year, 5.83 crore income tax returns had been submitted.
36.91 lakh income tax returns were submitted on Monday’s final day until 6 p.m. More than 1.78 crore successful logins were recorded on the Income Tax Department’s e-filing website up till 6 p.m. on Monday.
However, the number of income tax returns filed on the last day of this year is only half that of the previous year (72.42 lakh ITRs were filed on July 31, 2022). This demonstrates that the majority of tax payers for this year filed their taxes before the deadline.
Contrary to previous instances, the administration has not extended the deadline by five to seven days. Instead, they are requesting that taxpayers pay a penalty in order to file income tax forms after the due date. If someone fails to file their income tax returns by July 31 and their income is less than Rs. 5 lakh, they must pay a penalty of Rs. 1,000; for people whose income is greater than Rs. 5 lakh, the penalty for filing their income tax returns after the deadline is Rs. 5,000.
