NEW DELHI: The National Investigation Agency (NIA), which has been pursuing the terror group across several pockets of India, made two significant arrests this week. The first involved a member of the same terrorist group from Jharkhand, and the second involved busting an ISIS module based in Kerala.

In the episode involving Kerala, the NIA allegedly prevented communal rioting from breaking out as a result of attacks on houses of worship and the targeted killings of specific community leaders. According to authorities in the NIA, one suspect was apprehended from a hiding in Tamil Nadu, while searches were carried out in at least four different places in Thrissur and Palakkad.

Following the arrest of one suspect, the NIA sleuths collaborated with the Kerala Police Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) in an intelligence-based operation and investigated four places based on reliable information and investigations. An NIA spokesperson stated that the searches were carried out at three locations in Kerala’s Thrissur and one in the Palakkad district to dismantle the IS cell, which had been planning terrorist operations and performing surveillance missions.

Indicted Ashif, also known as Mathilakath Kodayil Ashraf, was found and apprehended by NIA teams on Tuesday from a hideout in Sathyamangalam, Tamil Nadu. The spokesperson added that searches were carried out the following day (Wednesday) in the homes of Ashif and three other people, identified as Seyid Nabeel Ahammed, Shiyas TS of Thrissur, and Rayees of Palakkad. Digital gadgets and incriminating documents were also seized during these inspections.

According to the NIA spokesperson, the module has allegedly been involved in engaging in dacoities and other criminal acts to raise money for supporting IS activities and carrying out terror strikes. The agency claimed that these individuals were planning terrorist attacks and had already conducted reconnaissance of a number of important locations, including places of worship and leaders of particular communities in the State, with the goal of sowing terror and inciting communal conflict in Kerala.

A 19-year-old ISIS member was detained by the NIA teams on Thursday after searches were conducted at his home and rental property in the states of Jharkhand and UP, respectively.

According to NIA officials, the accused, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) student Faizan Ansari alias Faiz, has been arrested. On July 16 and 17, authorities raided his home in the Jharkhand region of Lohardaga and a rented residence in Aligarh, U.P. They also seized multiple electronic devices, as well as evidence-related papers and documents.

Ansari was in contact with ISIS agents based abroad who were advising him on joining the outlawed group. He was considering performing ‘hijrat’ at an ISIS battle theatre abroad together with other ISIS militants who were planning deadly acts.
