Newlywed Punjabi Woman Dies by Suicide Abroad
Worked in Maldives on permit; family blames husband’s mental torture
Punjab : A tragic incident has surfaced involving a newlywed Punjabi woman who reportedly died by suicide in the Maldives. The 26-year-old woman from Jalandhar district had moved to the island nation about six months ago on a work permit and was employed at a hotel as housekeeping staff. Her marriage, which was a love marriage, took place last year. However, her family claims that she was mentally harassed by her husband to such an extent that she was compelled to take her own life.
According to the family, the woman had spent some time in India with her husband after the wedding and later moved to the Maldives in search of better job opportunities. In recent months, her mental condition had visibly deteriorated. She often made emotional phone calls home, crying and expressing her distress. The family further alleges that her husband was extremely suspicious of her, frequently argued with her over the phone, and constantly pressured her to return to India. Just days before her death, she reportedly told her mother during a call that she could no longer endure the emotional pain.
Maldivian police have confirmed that the cause of death is suicide and have launched an investigation. The Indian Embassy has been informed, and efforts are underway to bring the deceased’s body back to India. Her grieving family is now demanding strict legal action against her husband and a high-level probe into the incident.
This heartbreaking case raises serious concerns about the mental well-being and safety of Indian women working abroad. It also highlights the urgent need to foster mutual understanding and emotional trust in marriages, especially those rooted in love and choice, so that situations do not escalate to such tragic outcomes.
