1849 – The Siege of Multan ended in Second Anglo-Sikh War: The Second Anglo-Sikh War of 1848-1849 was one of the last major military conflicts between the East India Company and an important Indian power before the 1857 revolt, and resulted in the annexation of the Punjab by the British.
1939 – The uranium atom was split for the first time using the cyclotron at Columbia University in New York City. Thus began the Manhattan Project, leading to the construction of the atom bomb.
1993 – Satish Chandra Pandey, a BJP supporter from Sultanpur who had hijacked an Indian Airlines flight on January 22, 1993, surrendered at the insistence of Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Pandey had hijacked Lucknow-Delhi flight IC-810 to protest against then PM PV Narasimha Rao’s assurance that Babri Masjid would be rebuilt.
1997 – American Lottie Williams was reportedly the first human to be struck by a remnant of a space vehicle after re-entering the earth’s atmosphere.
1999 – Graham Stewart Staines, an Australian missionary, and his 2 sons were burned to death in Manoharpur by activists of the Bajrang Dal. A trial court later sentenced Dara Singh to death but in 2011 it was reduced to life in prison on appeal.
2002 – In Calcutta heavily armed gunmen attacked the U.S. government cultural centre. Five police officers were killed and twenty others, including one pedestrian and one private security guard, were wounded.
2013 – Scientist in China discover an ancient human fossil in a cave near Beijing; the 40,000-year-old leg bone shows it was related to the ancestors of present-day Asians and Native Americans.
