622 – Muhammad and his followers completed their Hijra from Mecca to Medina to escape religious persecution.
1852 – A new invention, the dirigible – a semi-rigid airship – was demonstrated in a flight from Paris to Trappe. Henri Giffard installed a small (3 h.p.) steam engine of his own design in the gondola of a 147-foot-long spindle shaped coal-gas balloon. T

his engine turned an 11 ft propeller producing a speed of 5 mph against the wind over a distance of 17 miles on a 3-hour trip. This was the first powered and controlled flight ever achieved.

1853 – 1st round-the-world trip by yacht (Cornelius Vanderbilt).

1873 – Establishment of “Satyashodhak Samaj”, (Truth-seeker Movement) at Pune, by Mahatma Jyotirao Phule.

1889 – Alexander Dey patented the dial time recorder. This style of time clock was first manufactured by the Dey Company and then as Industrial Time Recorders (ITR) after 1907. It used a dial that employees were required to point to their assigned number, and press to record the time of arrival and departure. The numbers of the employees and times were recorded on a sheet of paper wrapped around a drum.

1895 – 1st round-the-world trip by a woman on a bicycle (took 15 months).

1909 – Thomas M. Flaherty filed for a U.S. patent, with an idea for a “Signal for Crossings” This was the first U.S. application for a traffic signal design. His signal used a large horizontal arrow pivoted on a post, which turned to indicate the right of way direction. It could be activated by an electric solenoid by a policeman beside the road.

1932 – Gandhi and Dr. B. R. Ambedkar agree to the Poona Pact, which reserved seats in the Indian provincial legislatures for the “Depressed Classes” (Untouchables).

1932 – Preetilata Waddedara, the first armed woman revolutionary, was hanged for “Chatgaon Ammunitions plot”.

1947 – Pakistani raiders invade Kashmir.

1960 – The first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, the USS Enterprise, was launched in Newport, Virginia. It was the most astonishing vessel of its time and by far the largest warship in the world. Powered by eight nuclear reactors, it does not need to carry its own fuel oil and so has more room for aviation fuel and weapons. In 1963, Enterprise and two similarly powered cruisers made a non-stop voyage around the world to demonstrate the viability of nuclear power.

1988 – Carl Lewis runs world record 100m (9.92 sec).

1997 – I. K. Gujral, Prime Minister, formally stated India’s claim to permanent membership of Security Council at the U.N. General Assembly meeting.

1999 – The Chief Controller of Defence Accounts (pensions) was renamed as the Principal Controller of Defence Accounts (Pensions), Allahabad.

2002 – Terrorist strike in India, which resulted in more than 30 people dying and more than 80 people injured, in an attack on the Akshardham temple in Gujarat. The dead terrorists were identified as Ashraf Ali Mohammed Farooq and Murtuza Hafiz Yasin and were proven to have been trained and dispatched by the terrorist organization Lashkar-e-Taiba, based in Pakistan. (Built by the contributions of thousands of volunteers the temple is dedicated to Lord Swaminarayan).

2014 – India has successfully launched a space probe into orbit around Mars on its maiden attempt, making it the first Asian country to orbit the planet; at $74 million, the spacecraft cost about 11% of the U.S. Maven, which reached Mars orbit two days prior. India also became the first country to enter the Mars orbit in its first attempt.

2015 – Stampede of people during the Hajj kills 717 people during symbolic stoning of the devil at Mina, near Mecca, Saudi Arabia.

2021 – Notorious Indian gangster Jitender Maan Gogi shot death in a court in Delhi, by men posing as lawyers.

1861 – Madame Bhikaji Rustom Cama, mother of the Indian Revolution. From an early age she took an interest in social and political work.

1950 – Mohinder Amarnath, cricketer, coach, and sportscaster.
