1838 – Ephraim Morris patented the railroad brake.

1876 – American inventor Melville (Reuben) Bissell received a U.S. patent for the carpet sweeper. (At his crockery shop in Grand Rapids his wife Anna’s health was affected by dust from the packing materials. From a desperate need for self-preservation, he invented the carpet sweeper).

1950 – U. N. Assembly rejects Indian-Soviet proposal to admit Communist China.

1965 – Chinese government extends ultimatum to India to dismantle forts within four days in China.

2000 – Karnam Malleswari adds a glorious chapter to Indian sports history at the Sydney International Convention Centre by becoming the first woman to gain an Olympic medal. (She becomes the first Indian woman to win an Olympic bronze medal at the Sydney Olympics).

2014 – Crowds line up at retailers across the U.S. as the Apple iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are offered for sale; buyers are seeking to be some of the first to own the devices, which may be shipped as late as November for those who pre-ordered online.
