1621 – Galileo invents telescope.

1910 – Neon lighting, developed by French physicist Georges Claude, made its public debut at the Paris Motor Show.

1922 – The first really successful Technicolor motion picture film was released.

1955 – In exercise of the powers conferred by the provision in Article 343 (2) of the Indian constitution, orders were issued for the use of Hindi language in addition to the English language for specific purposes of the union.

1967 – First heart transplant operation performed by Dr. Christiaan Barnard. The patient, 54-yr-old Louis Washkansky lasted only 18 days before succumbing to double pneumonia.

1971 – Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 starts.

1971 – India recognizes Bangla Desh.

1982 – The retired dentist Barney Clark became the world’s first recipient of the artificial heart.

1984 – Bhopal gas tragedy. 3,000 die. ( In 1989, after years of litigation, Union Carbide agreed to pay the Indian government $470 million in damages. In return, the government agreed to drop criminal charges against the company and its former chairman).

1989 – Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev and US President George H. W. Bush, declare the Cold War over.

2012 – Vietnam accuses China of cutting seismic survey cables from territorial waters in the South China, disputed by Vietnam, the Philippines Malaysia, Taiwan, and Brunei
