1768 – Nizam accepted British supremacy and Smith Col. signed a peace treaty with the Nizam.
1792 – The Third Mysore War ended in Tipu Sultan’s signing of Peace Treaty dictated by Lord Cornwallis & surrendering his two sons, Abdul Khaliq & Maiz-Uddin. This is known as Treaty of Seringapatam (also called Srirangapatnam, Mysore’s capital).
1813 – The first cotton mill in the world in which the whole process of cotton manufacturing from spinning to weaving was carried on by power was incorporated in Waltham, US. Located on a river bank it used water power.
1886 – London Times publishes world’s 1st classified ad.
1893 – Rudolf Diesel received a German patent for the diesel engine. His engine burns fuel oil rather than gasoline, and uses high compressed pressure of the gases in the cylinder rather than a spark to ignite the fuel. Despite the diesel engine’s exhaust pollution, its fuel efficiency may make it more environmentally sound than the gasoline engine in the long run.
1896 – The Tootsie Roll was introduced by Austrian immigrant Leo Hirshfield to the U.S. In a small store in New York City, he began producing his chocolaty, chewy candy, which he named after a nickname of “Tootsie” for his five-year-old daughter, Clara. By 1905, production moved to a four-story factory in New York. During World War II, Tootsie Rolls were added to American soldiers’ rations because of their ability to withstand severe weather conditions and give quick energy. (Tootsie Rolls are made from a base of sugar, corn syrup, soy-bean oil, skim milk and cocoa. Current production is over 49 million pieces a day.)
1916 – French artillery kills entire French 72nd division at Samogneux Verdun. (With a German death toll of 143,000 (out of 337,000 total casualties) and a French one of 162,440, Verdun would come to signify, more than any other battle, the grinding, bloody nature of warfare on the Western Front during World War I).
1946 – Some 300,000 Indians joined in anti-British demonstrations in the wake of previous day’s violent riots in the city of Bombay. Indian Navy rebels. A day of terror and rebellion saw Indian Navy members turn against their British officers firing machine guns.
1954 -The first mass inoculation of children against polio with the Salk vaccine began in US.
1980 – Prakash Padukone becomes the first Indian to win All-England Badminton Championship.
1997 – The successful cloning of an adult mammal was announced: a female lamb named “Dolly” that was born 5 Jul 1996. Dolly lived until 14 Feb 2003, when she was put down due to the effects of a progressive lung disease.
1997 – 176 people dead and 500 injured in a major fire at a religious congregation in Baripada, Orissa.
1998 – Osama bin Laden publishes a fatwa declaring jihad against all Jews and Crusaders.
2020 – Violent protests against new citizenship laws in Delhi erupt leaving at least 38 people dead over the next few days.

1998 – Raman Lamba, former Indian Test cricketer, passed away in Dhaka, three days after being hit on the head while close-in fielding.
2004 – Vijay Anand, film director.
