1896 – The first x-ray photograph in the U.S. may have been taken by Dr. Henry Louis Smith. It showed the location of a bullet in the hand of a corpse, using a 15-minute exposure.

1908 – A wireless message was sent long-distance for the first time from the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

1937 – The first U.S. patent for a submarine cable plow was issued. It was designed to feed a cable at the same time that it would dig a trench in the ocean bed. The device could be used at depths up to a half mile.

1948 – Mahatma Gandhi begins his final fast.
