1761 – Battle at Panipat: Afghan army beats Marathas. (This third battle of Panipat is considered one of the largest and most eventful fought in the 18th century, and has perhaps the largest number of fatalities in a single day reported in a classic formation battle between two armies; 60,000 to 70,000 died).
1785 – Frenchman Jean Pierre Blanchard and American scientist and physician John Jeffries made the first air crossing of the English Channel from England to France in a hot-air balloon – the first international flight.
1890 – W B Purvis patents fountain pen.
1927 – Commercial telephone service (using radio) began between New York and London.
2015 – French satirical weekly newspaper Charlie Hebdo attacked in Paris. 12 killed and 11 injured. Al-Qaeda’s branch in Yemen took responsibility for the attack.
2015 – Teixobactin, a newly discovered antibiotic, offers hope in treating tuberculosis and infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria; the drug has been effective in rodent trials but has not yet been tested in humans.
2018 – It snows in the Sahara Desert – 15 inches reported in Aïn Séfra, Northwest Algeria.
2022 – First successful transplant of a pig’s heart into a human when genetically modified pig’s heart inserted into a 53-year-old man in Baltimore, Maryland.
