1863 – Four-wheeled roller skates were patented by James Plimpton of New York.

1887 – Thomas Stevens, US, is 1st man to bicycle around the world.

1912 – The closest approach to earth by the moon was 221,441 miles apart centre to centre.

1932 – British Viceroy of India Lord Willingdon arrests Gandhi & Nehru.

1948 – Burma achieved its independence from Great Britain. (In 1989, Burma changed its name to Myanmar to reflect the multi-ethnic composition of the country).

1958 – The Russian Sputnik I satellite, the first man-made object to orbit the earth, fell back into the atmosphere and disintegrated, after 92 days in space. The Sputnik (meaning “companion” or “fellow traveller”) circled the earth every 95 minutes at almost 20,000 miles per hour, 500 miles above the Earth.

1962 – The first fully automated subway train began revenue service with passengers in New York City.

1967 – Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. began delivery of the MIG aircraft.

1972 – Pakistan proposed to talk after the (1971) war.

1996 – The EV1 electric car, running on nickel-metal-hydride batteries, was announced by General Motors (GM). GM scrapped the electric model in 2003, citing excessive production and maintenance expenses. The company went bankrupt in 2008, and was bailed out by the U.S. government.

2004 – Spirit, a robot rover landed on Mars to analyze the planet’s rocks, looking for evidence of water. It has taken the only photo of Earth from another planet. Surviving dust storms, it far outlasted its expected useful life. (A twin robot rover, Opportunity, landed three weeks after Spirit on the other side of the planet).

2010 The Burj Khalifa, world’s tallest building at 829.8 m, officially opens in Dubai.

2016 – Colombo’s Gemology Institute certifies world’s largest ever blue star sapphire at 1404.49 carats, found in a Sri Lankan mine.

2021 – South Korea, already the country with world’s lowest birth rate, records more deaths than births for the first time.
