1757 – After the Battle of Plassey, Robert Clive defeated Siraj-ud-Daulah, Mir Jafar, Nawab of Bengal and re-captured Calcutta, after it had been seized by the Nawab of Bengal.
1839 – French pioneering photographer Louis Daguerre took the first photograph of the moon. Unfortunately, it was lost on 8 March, when a fire burned his laboratory, together with his records and early experiment materials.
1879 – 1st Test match hat-trick, Fred Spofforth at the MCG.
1936 – The first electron tube to enable night vision was described, in St Louis, US.
