1895 – Wilhelm Röntgen first observed X-rays during an experiment at Würzburg University. After further investigation, on 1 Jan 1896, he notified other scientists of his discovery of this new radiation that would become known as X-rays.
1947 – Junagadh accedes to India.
1990 – Congress (I) extends support to Chandrasekhar to form Government, even as BJP and Left parties decline the request of President R. Venkataraman to form Government.
2000 – India wins the men’s team title in the World Carrom championship in New Delhi.
2013 – Palestinian investigators claim their former leader, Yasser Arafat, did not die of old age or ill health; they believe Israel killed him because his exhumed body contained high levels of the radioactive element polonium-210.
2016 – PM Narendra Modi announces the demonetization of all ₹500 and ₹1,000 banknotes during an unscheduled live televised address, cancelling 86% of the notes in circulation in a battle against corruption.

1960 – Air Marshal Subroto Mukherjee (the first Chief of the Air Staff of the Indian Air Force), died while having dinner in Tokyo, where he had gone with the Air India International Airlines which made its first inaugural flight to the city of Tokyo.
