GUWAHATI: The Mizoram vote-counting date has been moved from December 3 to December 4 by the Election Commission (EC).

This is in response to the Mizos’ requests to the EC to move the vote-counting date because Sunday is a day of observance for Mizo Christians.

“The EC stated in a statement that the Commission has received multiple representations from different sources asking for a change in the date of counting from December 3, 2023 (Sunday), to some other week day, on the grounds that December 3, 2023, being Sunday, has special significance for the people of Mizoram.”

The announcement went on, “The Commission has decided to change the date of counting for the general election to the Legislative Assembly of Mizoram from Sunday, December 3, 2023, to Monday, December 4, 2023, after taking these representations into consideration.”

An important state organization had earlier in the day urged political parties to abstain from sending representatives and candidates to the polling places on December 3 in protest over the EC’s decision to hold the counting on a Sunday.

The NGO Coordination Committee (NGOCC), a coalition of numerous student and civil society organizations, organized demonstrations in Aizawl and outside the state’s district offices, calling for the vote count to take place on a day other than Sunday.

NGOCC chairman Lalhmachhuana attacked the EC for remaining silent in the face of pleas from several organizations, religious institutions, and political parties to change the counting date while speaking at a rally in Aizawl.
