MHA team begins probe in PM’s security breach

Team visits the location of Jan. 5 incident; later SC halts all probes by Centre and State govts on request from Punjab Counsel

Chandigarh/New Delhi, Jan 7 (UNI) A committee formed by the Union Home Ministry to investigate the security breach during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Punjab visit, reached the spot of the incident on Friday and inspected the location and interacted with police and state officials.
The team reached the place of the incident on Friday morning, and were there for around 40 minutes. Sources said the team examined videos, photos and other evidence to locate the spot where the Prime Minister’s convoy got stuck. The team questioned several police officials as well.
After carrying out its investigation on the flyover, the team interrogated top officials at the BSF headquarters, which included officials from Ferozepur, Moga, Bathinda and Faridkot. The team members also questioned ADGP Cyber Crime G Nageshwar Rao for around 50 minutes.
Sources said the team has summoned 13 officials for questioning. Those summoned include ADGP Jitendra Jain, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Patiala, Mukhwinder Singh Chinna, DIG Ferozepur Inderbir Singh, Faridkot DIG Surjeet Singh, Ferozepur DC Davinder Singh, Ferozepur SSP Harmandeep Hans, Moga SSP Charanjit Singh Sohal, Kotkapura Duty Magistrate Varinder Singh, Ludhiana Joint Commissioner Ankur Mahendru, Bathinda DC APS Sandhu, Bathinda SSP Ajay Maluja and the Ferozepur VVIP control room in-charge.
An FIR has also been registered in Ferozepur against unidentified protesters who blocked the Prime Minister’s cavalcade.
The three-member committee is led by Sudhir Kumar Saxena, Secretary (Security), Cabinet Secretariat. The other members are Balbir Singh, Joint Director, Intelligence Bureau, and S. Suresh, Inspector General, Special Protection Group (SPG).
The Chief Secretary of Punjab sent a report on the incident to Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla on Friday morning.
PM Modi could not attend a rally in Ferozepur in Punjab on Wednesday after his motorcade got stuck on the flyover for around 20 minutes due to the roadblock by protesters. The incident took place around 30 km from the National Martyrs Memorial in Hussainiwala.
A Punjab government probe is also underway.
