Mamata to be Chancellor for State-controlled universities, cabinet okays

Kolkata: The West Bengal Cabinet on Monday approved an official proposal to appoint Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as the Chancellor of all the state controlled universities across the state to replace the Governor, official sources said.
The Cabinet also agreed to a proposal to remove the Governor as a Visitor at private universities with the State Education minister replacing him.
Currently, Governor Jagdeep Dhankar by virtue of his official status is the chancellor of all the state-controlled universities.
The state-run universities include specialized government run departments like health, agriculture, animal husbandry and minority affairs where also the chief minister would be the next chancellor.
The proposals have to be passed as the Bills in the State Legislative Assembly where the ruling Trinamool Congress is in the majority.
On May 26, the State cabinet passed a resolution to remove Governor Jagdeep Dhankar, and appoint CM Mamata as the chancellor.
The latest Trinamool Congress government move happened in view of tussles between Nabanna and Raj Bhavan on various issues. (UNI)
