New Delhi, Sep 3 (UNI) Delhi Government is working to rejuvenate major drains in the city flowing into the River Yamuna and convert them into clean water channels, officials said on Friday.
Irrigation and Flood Control Minister Satyendar Jain has given directions to the concerned departments to start working on rejuvenation and beautification plan of major drains that assimilate into Yamuna.
The instructions cane in a meeting held between the minister and department officials earlier in the day.
The work will be carried upon Shahdara, Najafgarh and other major drains in the city which are filled with solid waste, sludge and wastewater.
The plan is a part of clean Yamuna project. The revival of drains will lessen the avenues that contribute in polluting the river.
Najafgarh and supplementary drain and Shahdara link drain will be cleaned and beautified. The Minister said that all major drains like Najafgarh, Supplementary and Shahdara drain will be converted into clean water channels again. Currently, these drains are struggling with solid waste, sludge and wastewater. He instructed the department to include solutions to the problems hampering the water quality of the drain. The Minister reiterated that cleaning the Yamuna is the prime target of the Delhi Government and multiplicity of the agencies should not slow down the progress of work. The Minister further instructed that solutions should be inbuilt in the project itself to achieve holistic development of the drains.
“In the meeting held on Friday with the irrigation and flood control department, Jain reviewed the plan laid down by the officials for the rejuvenation and beautification of Najafgarh drain and supplementary drain and Shahdara link drain. The minister directed the department that the drains should be cleaned and beautified so that it carries only clean water to Yamuna,” statement issued by the Delhi government said.
“Jain further added that this will help in recharging groundwater levels of the area adjacent to the drains,” it added.
