Big Boost for Tamil Nadu Farmers; 87,226 MT Khopra and 96,879 MT Totapuri Mangoes procurement ordered by Centre at an outlay of Rs. 1,049 Crores
New Delhi/Chennai: In a major decision aimed at safeguarding farmers’ interests, the Government of India has approved the procurement of Khopra and Totapuri mangoes from farmers of Tamil Nadu. Union Mi
nister for Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, has accorded approval for the procurement, ensuring better price realization for producers and protecting them from distress sales caused by market fluctuations.
Based on the proposal submitted by the Govt of Tamil Nadu, the Centre has approved the procurement of Khopra during 2026. Under the approval granted by the Minister Chouhan, a total of 87,226 metric tonnes of Khopra will be procured in the state, comprising 87,000 metric tonnes of milling Khopra and 226 metric tonnes of ball
copra.
The entire procurement will be undertaken at the MSP (Minimum Support Price) under the Price Support Scheme. The total MSP value of the approved procurement exceeds Rs. 1,049.16 crore. The decision is expected to ensure remunerative prices for Khopra growers in Tamil Nadu and shield them from distress sales arising from falling market prices. With assured procurement at MSP, farmers will have greater income security and confidence that the government stands ready to purchase their produce at the notified price.
In another significant reli
ef measure, the Minister has also approved the procurement of 96,879 metric tonnes of Totapuri mangoes in Tamil Nadu during 2026 under the Market Intervention Scheme.
The procurement will be carried out under the MIS, with the Market Intervention Price fixed at Rs. 1,545.41 per quintal. The intervention is aimed at ensuring that Totapuri mango growers receive fair and remunerative prices for their produce and are protected from having to sell at a loss due to sudden declines in market prices. The measure is expected to provide price stability, safeguard farmers’ incomes, and ensure better returns for their produce. The approval for large-scale procurement of both copra and Totapuri mangoes, along with MSP-backed support exceeding Rs. 1,049.16 crore for copra, comes as a major relief for farmers in Tamil Nadu. Such interventions play a crucial role in enhancing farmers’ incomes, strengthening the rural economy, and reinforcing confidence in the agricultural sector.
