Former Punjab minister Bikram Singh Majithia, who is currently lodged in New Nabha Jail, will have a crucial hearing today at the Mohali Court. The matter pertains to his request for a change of barrack, citing alleged concerns over safety and prison conditions.

Majithia was shifted to the New Nabha Jail earlier this year following his judicial custody in a disproportionate assets case, which is still under investigation by the enforcement authorities. The case has attracted widespread media attention due to Majithia’s political stature and the sensitive nature of the charges.

Sources reveal that Majithia’s legal team has filed a formal petition claiming that the current barrack lacks basic facilities, and that his safety is at risk due to his political affiliations. They have requested that he be moved to a more secure or isolated cell within the prison premises.

The Punjab Police’s vigilance bureau is actively pursuing the assets probe, which alleges that Majithia amassed wealth far beyond his known income sources during his tenure in public office. He is being questioned periodically by the investigating agencies, both within the jail and in escorted visits to relevant departments.

While the authorities maintain that Majithia is being provided all facilities permitted under jail rules, the defense has pointed to health issues and “targeted harassment” as reasons for seeking the barrack change.

Today’s court hearing is expected to decide whether the former minister will remain in his current barrack or be moved to a different one. Security has been tightened in and around the Mohali district court, with additional police deployment in anticipation of media and political presence.

Political observers see this legal development as part of the ongoing tug-of-war between state law enforcement and senior political leaders, especially in the context of Punjab’s high-stakes political environment.

Whether this hearing results in relief for Majithia or strengthens the government’s stand against corruption remains to be seen.
