BHOPAL: Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan greeted the residents of the state on Saturday in honour of International Tiger Day and said that the number of tigers in Madhya Pradesh increased from 526 in 2018 to 785 in 2022.

Bhupender Yadav, the union minister for environment, forests, and climate change, also praised Madhya Pradesh for maintaining its position as the “leading tiger state of India.”

According to the National Tiger Conservation Authority and Wildlife Institute of India’s research, “Status of Tigers: Co-predators & Prey in India-2022,” Madhya Pradesh has the most tigers in the nation, followed by Karnataka (563) and Uttarakhand (560).

According to the survey, 259 new tigers were added to Madhya Pradesh’s forests over a four-year period.

Chouhan tweeted, “It is a source of great delight that the number of tigers in our state has climbed to 785 from 526 in four years as a consequence of collaboration of the people of our state and unceasing efforts of the Forest Department.

He continued by saying, “Let us all together take a pledge to conserve nature for future generations on the occasion of International Tiger Day.” He congratulated the people of the state on their achievement.

The number of tigers in the state was 300 in 2006, but in 2010 it lost its top spot as the number of tigers dropped to 257, compared to 300 in Karnataka.

Karnataka recorded 406 tigers in 2014, compared to MP’s 300 big cats.

However, Madhya Pradesh’s tiger population increased after that, and in 2018, it regained the top spot with 526 big cats captured compared to 524 in Karnataka.

Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Panna, Pench, Satpura, and Sanjay-Dubri Tiger Reserve are the six tiger reserves in Madhya Pradesh.

Yadav, a minister for the Union, congratulated Madhya Pradesh for the accomplishment on Twitter as well.

“MP is the Leading Tiger State in India, according to the most recent tiger estimation exercise, with 785 tigers! This demonstrates MP’s dedication to preserving tigers through rigorous protection and oversight with the help of local communities, he said.
