Delhi : The weather in Delhi-NCR took a sudden turn on Friday evening, bringing much-needed relief to residents reeling under intense heat. Areas including Delhi, Noida, and parts of Gurugram experienced a dust storm followed by light showers, which significantly lowered temperatures and improved air quality. The shift in weather brought smiles to faces as people stepped out to enjoy the cooler breeze after weeks of oppressive summer heat. By Saturday morning, dark clouds continued to hover over the capital region. Several localities reported light rain and overcast skies since early morning. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a yellow alert for light rainfall and dust storms in parts of the region. The alert covered early morning and forenoon hours, warning of temporary disruptions in traffic due to reduced visibility and slippery roads. Residents reported a noticeable drop in temperature and a refreshing breeze across the city. Outdoor markets and public parks saw increased footfall as families and morning walkers took advantage of the relatively pleasant weather. Office-goers also found the commute less exhausting due to the cooler morning conditions.
The IMD has attributed this change in weather to a western disturbance passing over North India. These systems, common during the transition between summer and monsoon seasons, often bring short spells of rain, dust storms, and temporary relief from heatwaves. However, the relief is expected to be short-lived, as the department predicts that temperatures will start rising again by early next week. Air quality across NCR also showed marginal improvement post-rain. The brief showers helped settle suspended dust particles, improving visibility and providing temporary respite from pollution. Authorities have urged commuters to drive carefully due to the possibility of slippery roads and sudden gusts of wind.
Meanwhile, local vendors selling hot snacks, tea, and coffee saw brisk business as people gathered around roadside stalls to enjoy the rainy spell. Social media platforms were flooded with photos and videos of the sudden change in weather, with users expressing joy and hope for more frequent pre-monsoon showers in the coming days. Though brief, the weather shift has provided a much-needed breather for Delhi-NCR residents. With summer still in full swing, people remain hopeful that more such spells will return before the full onset of monsoon.
