Heavy rains cause landslides in Kathua, Kashmir, killing eight.

Police, Army, and SDRF rescuers laboured for hours to recover five dead from two families’ dwellings in Surjan village despite constant rains.

On Wednesday, torrential rains caused landslides in Kathua, Jammu and Kashmir, killing eight people, including five children.

Kathua Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Minhas gave the deceased’s family Rs 50,000 ex-gratia.

We had eight rain-related deaths. Minhas said the district administration is monitoring the flood-like condition.

He offered his condolences and said that the deceased’s next of kin will receive Rs 50,000 and the injured Rs 25,000.

He claimed rescuers from the police, Army, SDRF, and locals laboured for hours to collect the dead of five members of two families from the ruins of their houses at Surjan village, despite the rain.

Police named the deceased as Zareena Begum (40), her two kids Shahbaz Ahmad (14) and Arbaz (2), Nazia Tabassum (14), and her brother Mohd Asif (12).

Ajay Singh, 13, died in a landslip near his residence in Sitti village, and Naseema Begum, 55, was found dead in Drangal-Mandote, the official added.

He stated Sham Lal (50) died after falling under a landslip at Bhuldi Nallah near Daggar while clearing a water passage to minimise damage to his house. Lal’s body was discovered and given to his family.

Heavy rains in the district damaged two houses altogether and numerous others partially, the official added.

The Ujh river and its tributaries overwhelmed several low-lying regions, leading authorities to ask residents to leave.

Lt Governor Manoj Sinha expressed sympathy over the rain-related deaths and ordered the district government to assist the grieving families and injured.

Jitendra Singh, a union minister, tweeted his sorrow over the rain-related deaths in his constituency.

Singh said he is in daily contact with deputy commissioner and SSP Kathua Shivdeep Singh Jamwal and providing all feasible support.
