Kolkata Law College Gangrape: Mahua Moitra Slams Own Party Leaders
Says misogynistic mindset exists in all parties; TMC distances itself from controversial remarks
Kolkata: The Kolkata Law College gangrape case has sparked a major political storm, with Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra openly criticizing her own party colleagues over their controversial remarks on the incident. Moitra condemned the mindset displayed by the leaders and emphasized that misogyny is a problem cutting across political boundaries.
In a strongly worded statement, Mahua Moitra said, “The hatred against women is not limited to any one political party. The difference is that TMC condemns such regressive thinking, no matter where it comes from.” Her comments came after two TMC leaders made objectionable statements regarding the gangrape incident, drawing widespread outrage on social media and from women’s rights organizations.
The incident involves the alleged gangrape of a college student at a prominent law college in Kolkata, with multiple accused reportedly having political affiliations. The case has triggered protests across educational campuses and strong demands for justice from civil society. Reacting swiftly, the TMC leadership distanced itself from the controversial comments made by its members. A party spokesperson said, “The views expressed by certain individuals do not reflect the party’s stand. We demand the harshest punishment for the culprits and a fair investigation.”
Mahua Moitra’s bold stance has been appreciated by several activists who believe more political leaders should speak out against sexism and patriarchal views within their own ranks. She reiterated the need for political accountability and gender sensitivity training within parties.
The opposition BJP has seized the moment to target TMC, accusing it of fostering a culture of impunity. However, TMC maintains that it is committed to women’s safety and has taken corrective steps by issuing show-cause notices to the leaders involved. The police investigation in the gangrape case is ongoing, with forensic evidence and CCTV footage being analyzed. Several arrests have already been made, and the case is expected to be tried in a fast-track court. As public outrage continues, the incident has become a litmus test for how political parties in India handle gender-based violence, both within society and within their own leadership structures.
