Kharge Congratulates Tarique Rahman on BNP’s Projected Win in Bangladesh Polls
New Delhi: Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday congratulated Tarique Rahman after projected results indicated that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is heading towards victory in Bangladesh’s 13th parliamentary elections. In a post on X, Kharge underscored the deep historical, cultural and linguistic ties between India and Bangladesh, reaffirming support for a democratic and inclusive neighbour.
“On behalf of the Indian National Congress, I congratulate Mr. Tarique Rahman and the BNP for winning the Parliamentary elections in Bangladesh. India and Bangladesh share deep-rooted bonds of history, language, culture, and multitude of other commonalities. A democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh would always be supported by all Indians for the stability and peace of our region,” he stated.
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also extended his congratulations to Rahman, saying the victory reflects the trust of the Bangladeshi people in his leadership. Modi reiterated India’s commitment to supporting a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh and expressed hope for further strengthening bilateral ties.
Meanwhile, the BNP said it is set to form the next government as counting continues. According to reports by The Daily Star, results from 249 of the 299 constituencies have been declared. The BNP and its allies have secured 181 seats, while Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and its allies have won 61 seats, indicating a significant shift in the country’s political landscape.
Rahman has also been unofficially declared elected from the Bogura-6 (Sadar) constituency after defeating his nearest rival by a wide margin. In view of the recent passing of his mother and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, Rahman has urged party workers to refrain from celebrations and instead offer prayers for her after Friday congregational prayers.
