Karachi Shaken 60 Times in June, Residents Gripped by Earthquake Fears

Karachi : Pakistan’s largest and most populous city, is experiencing an unprecedented wave of seismic activity, with 60 minor earthquakes recorded in the month of June alone. Although most of the tremors have been of low intensity, the repeated jolts have triggered widespread panic and raised fears of a potentially larger disaster.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department and local seismologists, the earthquakes ranged in magnitude from 2.0 to 3.5 on the Richter scale, affecting different parts of the city intermittently throughout the month. While no serious injuries or structural damage have been reported so far, the psychological toll on the residents is rising.

People across neighborhoods such as Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Korangi, and Saddar have been reporting sleepless nights, anxiety, and a constant fear of a major quake. Social media is filled with videos and messages of people rushing out of buildings during late-night tremors. Many residents have started spending nights in open areas, avoiding high-rise buildings altogether.

Experts believe that this sudden spike in seismic activity could be related to tectonic stress building up along the Makran Subduction Zone, which lies along the Arabian Sea coast. The region has historically remained vulnerable to earthquakes, and past events—such as the 2005 Kashmir earthquake—remain deeply etched in public memory.

Disaster management authorities in Sindh province have urged the public to remain calm but alert. Emergency drills and awareness campaigns are being conducted in schools and residential communities to educate people about safety during seismic events. Local hospitals and emergency services have also been put on standby as a precaution.

Geologists are closely monitoring the seismic data to understand whether this is a temporary pattern or a prelude to a more powerful earthquake. Some experts have called for updated infrastructure codes and a re-evaluation of the city’s disaster preparedness strategy.

As Karachi continues to experience tremors almost daily, the looming uncertainty has pushed the city’s residents to the edge. Many are demanding swift action from both provincial and federal authorities to ensure better seismic safety and communication.
