Journalists Maria Ressa, Dmitry Muratov receive Nobel Peace Prize
Oslo, Dec 10: Philippine journalist Maria Ressa and Russian Journalist Dmitry Muratov received their Nobel Peace Prize at Oslo City Hall in Norway on Friday.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded them this year’s Nobel Peace Prize for their respective works for freedom of expression.
The 60-year-old Muratov urged guests at the ceremony to observe a minute’s silence for those journalists killed in the line of duty.
Addressing the gathering after receiving the prestigious award, Maria Ressa said: “Every day, I live with the real threat of spending the rest of my life in jail just because I’m a journalist. When I go home, I have no idea what the future holds, but it’s worth the risk.”
“So this award is for all true journalism. This award is to my colleagues from Novaya Gazeta, who have lost their lives – Igor Domnikov, Yuri Shchekotschikhin, Anna Politkovskaya, Anastasija Baburova, Stas Markelov and Natasha Estemirova. This award is also to the colleagues who are alive, to the professional community who perform their professional duty,” the Nobel peace Prize website quoted Muratov as saying.
