Joe Root’s century takes England to 314/5 at Tea, trail by 50 runs
Lord’s, Aug 14 (UNI) England were 314/5 at Tea against India in the first innings on day three of the second Test of the five-match series here on Saturday.
It was skipper Root’s heroic century that took England past 300 runs against India in the first innings.
Root scored second consecutive century in the series and his fourth Test century at the Lord’s.
He also went on to bring up his 22nd Test century.
England still trail by 50 runs.
Earlier, at Lunch England were 216/3, but after that hosts lost two wickets in form of Bairstow caught at slip by skipper Kohli in Siraj’s over in 78.4 over and then wicket of Buttler taken by Sharma in 90.6 over.
Bairstow completed his half century 57 off 107 balls with 7 fours while Buttler also contributed 23 off 42 balls with 4 fours.
Bairstow and Root forged a partnership of 121 runs for fourth wicket, while Root and Buttler stand scored 54 runs for the fifth wicket.
Root (132) and Moeen Ali (20) not out were at the crease when Tea was declared.
For India, Siraj 3/71, Sharma 1/60 and Shami 1/87 were the wicket-takers.
