Israeli Foreign Minister Ashkenazi to pay first official visit to Egypt
Cairo, May 30 (Sputnik) Israeli Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi on Sunday will make his first official trip to Egypt since being appointed to the post, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said on Saturday.
“Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and Israeli Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi will hold talks in Cairo on Sunday,” a press release obtained by Sputnik read.
This is the first visit by an Israeli senior official to Egypt since the Cairo-brokered truce in the Gaza Strip came into force.
Clashes in East Jerusalem in early May led to the worst violence between Israel and Palestinians in the Gaza Strip in recent years. Palestinian militants launched several thousand rockets toward Israel. In response, Israel fired retaliatory strikes against Gaza. In Israel, 12 people were killed and over 50 were seriously wounded during the hostilities. The death toll among Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, Jerusalem, and the West Bank topped 270.
On May 21, Israel and the Hamas Islamist movement agreed to an Egypt-brokered ceasefire.
