Gaza Strip once again finds itself engulfed in flames and fear as Israel’s military escalates its campaign in the region. In what residents are calling one of the most terrifying nights in recent weeks, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) launched an intense barrage of air and ground attacks across the southern and eastern sectors of Deir al-Balah, a city in central Gaza.

According to Palestinian officials, at least 20 people lost their lives in Sunday’s strikes. Eyewitnesses described scenes of horror as missiles tore through residential buildings, reducing homes to rubble and sending clouds of smoke and ash into the sky. Emergency services rushed to the scenes, often digging through debris with bare hands in a desperate attempt to rescue those trapped beneath the wreckage.

For many Gazans, the fear is no longer limited to specific zones. “There are no safe areas left,” said Ahmed, a father of three from the city’s eastern quarter. “The areas we once thought were safe are now under fire. We go to sleep not knowing if we will wake up.”

The Israeli military stated that the operation was aimed at dismantling what it called “terror infrastructure,” including underground tunnels, weapons caches, and command centers used by Hamas. However, international human rights groups have raised concerns over the increasing toll on civilians, urging both sides to prioritize humanitarian corridors and respect international law.

This recent wave of aggression marks a significant escalation. Until now, many parts of Deir al-Balah had remained relatively untouched by direct warfare. With this new expansion of the conflict, however, fears are growing that the violence will continue to spread deeper into the heart of Gaza.

Hospitals in the region, already overburdened and running low on essential supplies, are struggling to treat the wounded. “We don’t have enough beds or medicine,” said Dr. Laila Mansour from Al-Aqsa Hospital. “Children, the elderly, entire families are being brought in. We are doing what we can, but the situation is becoming unmanageable.”

As night falls again over Gaza, the hum of drones and the distant echo of artillery remain constant. Families huddle in dark rooms, hoping the next strike doesn’t hit too close. Meanwhile, aid organizations continue to call for an immediate ceasefire to prevent further loss of innocent lives. The humanitarian crisis in Gaza deepens by the hour. With no clear end in sight, the people of Gaza brace themselves for what may be more days of darkness, destruction, and despair.
