New Delhi : The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a warning of continued rainfall across large parts of the country until June 5th as the monsoon progress slows down temporarily. After an early onset nearly eight days ahead of schedule, the southwest monsoon’s movement has stalled but is expected to regain strength from June 11th onwards. The IMD has cautioned that conditions could worsen in the coming days with heavy rains causing severe disruption, especially in the northeastern states and southern India. The monsoon arrived early in Kerala on May 24th and spread quickly covering parts of southern, northeastern, and western India. However, in recent days, the monsoon’s advance has halted, leading to varying rainfall intensity across regions already affected. The northeastern states have experienced particularly intense rainfall, resulting in widespread flooding. States such as Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, and Mizoram are grappling with severe waterlogging and damage to property and infrastructure. In Mizoram, the heavy rains forced the closure of all schools on Monday. Manipur has seen extensive water accumulation in homes, offices, healthcare centers, and other important facilities. In Imphal, the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences also faced flooding. Rescue operations involving fire brigade, National Disaster Response Force, and State Disaster Response Force successfully evacuated 37 patients to safety. The IMD has also forecasted the development of a seasonal weather system over the Bay of Bengal around June 11th, which will strengthen the monsoon and aid its further spread to northern parts of India. Typically, the monsoon rains start around June 1st in Kerala and cover the entire country by mid-July, playing a vital role in agriculture by supporting crops such as rice, maize, cotton, soybean, and sugarcane. The ongoing rains in the northeast have brought much-needed water but also raised concerns about damage and disruption to normal life. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and taking measures to provide relief and support to affected populations. With the monsoon expected to gain momentum in the coming days, farmers and residents hope for timely rains that will boost crop production and replenish water resources across India.
