Sports Department to invest ₹12 crore; facility to host national and international matches

Chandigarh : In a major boost to sports infrastructure in the region, Chandigarh is all set to get Tricity’s sixth astroturf hockey stadium. The Sports Department has announced a project worth ₹12 crore to construct a state-of-the-art hockey stadium that will meet national and international standards.

This new facility will not only benefit local players but also position Chandigarh as a key hub for hockey tournaments. Once completed, the stadium will be equipped to host national-level and international-level matches, providing young athletes with the opportunity to perform on professional grounds. The proposed stadium will be built within city limits at a location that ensures accessibility for players from Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula the Tricity area. Officials from the Sports Department stated that the tendering process will begin soon and construction is expected to be completed within the next 12 to 18 months.

A senior sports official said, Our goal is to make Chandigarh a center of excellence in hockey. With this new astroturf stadium, we aim to train our youth under top-notch conditions and attract top-tier matches to the city. The stadium will include all modern amenities such as floodlights, seating arrangements for spectators, dressing rooms, digital scoreboards, and dedicated training areas. The surface will comply with international norms as laid down by the FIH (International Hockey Federation).

Currently, Tricity has five astroturf hockey grounds two in Chandigarh, two in Mohali, and one in Panchkula. This sixth facility is expected to ease the load on existing infrastructure, especially during tournaments and training camps.

Hockey coaches and former players have welcomed the move, saying that such investments are crucial to revive and promote hockey at the grassroots and elite levels. They believe that hosting international matches will also inspire local talent and provide much-needed exposure. With this initiative, Chandigarh reaffirms its commitment to nurturing sports talent and becoming a significant player in India’s hockey resurgence.
