Iran’s ethics Police resume Islamic dress enforcement after protests

Iran’s morality police resume imposing Islamic clothing after demonstrations. Following the September killing of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, the morality police mostly withdrew as authorities attempted to quell widespread rallies calling for theocratic overthrow.

DUBAI: Iranian authorities on Sunday unveiled a new drive to force women to wear the Islamic headscarf as morality police returned to the streets 10 months after the death of a woman in their custody provoked widespread protests.

After 22-year-old Mahsa Amini’s death last September, authorities tried to quell widespread rallies calling for the collapse of Iran’s theocracy.

After over 500 protestors were slain and almost 20,000 jailed, the riots subsided earlier this year. In Tehran and other cities, women defied the dress code.

In December, there were rumours that the morality police had been dismantled.

During the crisis, authorities maintained the norms. The hijab is a crucial component of the Islamic revolution that brought Iran’s religious leadership to power, and they perceive Western attire as decadent.

Gen. Saeed Montazerolmahdi, a police spokesman, said the morality police would alert and jail women without hijab on Sunday. In Tehran, morality police drove marked vans.

Late Saturday, police raided Mohammed Sadeghi’s residence and arrested him. He posted a video in reaction to a morality police video. “I might kill if I see such a scene,” he remarked.
