Punjab : Turmoil has gripped the Punjab Congress once again as senior party leader and MLA Pargat Singh, along with former MLA Kikki Dhillon, tendered their resignations on Tuesday. The resignations were submitted in solidarity with former minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu, who has been under pressure amid internal party disputes.

The fallout also led to Pargat Singh stepping down as the head of the Moga District Congress Committee, a position he held recently. In a letter addressed to the party high command, both leaders cited mistrust, lack of coordination, and growing factionalism within the Punjab Congress as reasons behind their drastic step.

According to sources close to the matter, the move is seen as a direct message to the party leadership in Delhi, urging immediate intervention in the state unit’s functioning. The leaders allege that Ashu is being unfairly sidelined and that decisions in the state Congress are being influenced by a select few.

Pargat Singh, a former Indian hockey captain and now a vocal political figure, has long been associated with the reformist camp within Punjab Congress. His resignation is being interpreted as a serious signal of dissent from grassroots level leadership. The Congress high command has yet to issue an official response, but internal discussions have reportedly begun. AICC observers may soon be sent to Punjab to assess the growing unrest.

The latest resignations come at a time when the party is preparing for crucial local elections and is already grappling with factional battles following its 2022 assembly defeat. The rift threatens to weaken the Congress further in a state where it once held a strong political grip.
