India grabs five medals at ongoing U23 Wrestling Championships

Belgrade, Nov 6 (UNI) Women wrestlers Divya Kakran, Nisha Dahiya and Radhika claimed bronze medals in their respective weight categories on Day 5 of U23 Wrestling World Championships here.

Two-time Asia champion in 72kg weight category, Divya defeated US’ Kayla Marano 6-2 via fall, 6-2, while Radhika registered a victory over Aurora Campagna of Italy by 6-4 to clinch a bronze medal. Both the wrestlers came through the repechage round.

Meanwhile, Nisha contested for bronze after going down to Anastasiia Lavrenchuk in the semifinal. In the bronze medal contest, Nisha outclassed her opponent Latvia’s Elma Zeidlere 10-0 by technical superiority.

India have now grabbed five medals at the event, with Shivani Pawar clinching a silver and Anju picking a bronze on Thursday.
In the Men’s Freestyle event, Saurabh Madhukar Igave (57kg) will play for the bronze medal on Saturday, after losing to Aliabbas Rzazade of Azerbaijan in the semifinal. Saurabh had a fine run in the tournament as he registered a convincing win over his opponents on his way to the semifinal.

Parvinder, who lost in round 16, will compete in the repechage rounds after his opponent Georgios Pilidis of Greece advanced to the 65kg finals. However, Sahil’s campaign in 97kg ended in the quarterfinal after he was beaten by Danylo Stasiuk of Ukraine via fall.

Naveen (70kg) and Vicky (79kg) could not manage to go beyond the qualification round.
